Origins and Natural Habitat:

     Native to the lush waters of South America, particularly the Amazon River basin and its tributaries, the Sarpay Tetra thrives in warm, soft, and slightly acidic waters. Within its natural habitat, these tetras inhabit slow-moving streams, creeks, and flooded forest areas rich in vegetation. Their natural environment is characterized by dense aquatic plants, submerged roots, and subdued lighting, mimicking the conditions of their native waters is crucial for their well-being in captivity.



Physical Characteristics:

  One of the most striking features of the Sarpay Tetra is its brilliant coloration. Sporting a vivid combination of iridescent blue and shimmering gold, with a distinctive black stripe running horizontally from the eye to the base of the tail, this species truly stands out in any aquarium. The dorsal and anal fins of the Sarpay Tetra are elongated, lending an elegant appearance as they gracefully navigate through the water column. Typically, adult Sarpay Tetras reach a size of around 2 inches (5 centimeters), making them an ideal choice for community tanks of various sizes.      Creating a suitable habitat for Sarpay Tetras involves replicating their natural environment as closely as possible. A spacious aquarium with ample swimming room and hiding places among live plants, driftwood, and rocks is essential. The water temperature should be maintained between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C), with a pH level ranging from 6.0 to 7.5. Regular water changes and proper filtration are crucial for maintaining optimal water quality and preventing stress-related illnesses.


Diet:

   Sarpay Tetras are omnivores with a hearty appetite for both live and prepared foods. A varied diet consisting of high-quality flake, pellet, and frozen foods, supplemented with occasional treats of live or frozen brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia, will ensure their nutritional needs are met. Feeding small portions multiple times a day helps mimic their natural feeding behavior and promotes overall health and vitality.


Breeding:

   Breeding Sarpay Tetras in captivity is a rewarding experience for dedicated aquarists. To encourage spawning, provide a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water and a dense planting of fine-leaved plants such as java moss or spawning mops. Condition the breeding pair with a diet rich in live and frozen foods to stimulate reproductive behavior. Once the female releases her eggs, promptly remove the adults to prevent them from consuming the eggs or fry. With proper care and conditions, the eggs hatch within 24 to 36 hours, and the fry become free-swimming after about five days.
